Albin Scherping

Albin L. "Albie" Scherping, 75, Detroit Lakes, MN, formerly of Waubun, died Wednesday, April 11 at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 PM Tuesday, April 17 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, Msgr. Timothy McGee, officiating. Interment will be in St. Ann's Cemetery, Waubun. Friends may call 5:00 – 7:00 PM Monday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. There will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 PM followed by a Parish Vigil at 7:00 PM at the church. The visitation will continue 1 hour prior to the mass at the church on Tuesday. Albin Lawrence Scherping was born May 24, 1936 in Freeport, MN to Joseph and Veronica (Rau) Scherping. He moved with his family to a farm near Waubun, MN in 1942. He is a 1954 graduate of Waubun High School. Following graduation, he joined the family operation. Albie was united in marriage to Marlene Blattenbauer, September 20, 1958 in Beaulieu, MN. They purchased the Scherping family farm and operated it until moving to Detroit Lakes in 1994. After retiring from the farm, Albie continued to do custom combining until the time of his death. He and Marlene spent their winters in Casa Grande, AZ. He was a member of the Mahnomen Council, Knights of Columbus, WAMO, The Farmers Union, Waubun Old Timers Softball League and St. Ann's Parish Finance Council. He enjoyed time at McCraney and South Twin Lakes, watching his grandchildren's sporting events and farming. He was a wonderful father and was adored by his grandchildren. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Marlene of Detroit Lakes, four daughters: Colleen (Bruce) Borgrud of Waubun, Linda (Paul) Scherping of Detroit Lakes, Lori (Ron) Johnson of Casa Grande, AZ, Carrie (James) Christenson of Pelican Rapids, seven grandchildren: Lisa (Josh) Pippin, Nicki, Chris, Ben, Andy, Erin and Hayden, one great granddaughter: Veronica, 2 brothers: Clarence (Erna) Scherping of Apple Valley, MN, Edwin (Barb) Scherping of Waubun and a sister: Yvonne (Jim Zeis) Johnson of Moorhead, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother-in-law: Bill Johnson and his father and mother-in-law: Fred and Edwina Blattenbauer.
