Alf Goranson

Alf G. Goranson passed away on February 13, 2016, at the Golden Manor Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes at the age of 99. A memorial service will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, February 18, 2016, at Eksjo Lutheran Church in Lake Park. A visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Wednesday, February 17, 2016, at David Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes, with a prayer service at 4:30 pm, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. A burial of the ashes will take place at Eksjo Lutheran Cemetery in the spring.
Alf was born on a farm near Hawley on May 7, 1916. He was baptized, confirmed, and a lifelong member at Eksjo Lutheran Church. He attended Solem Grade School until age 14 when he had to quit school to help out on the family farm. He married Alpha Bakke of Hitterdal on November 9, 1946. They had one son, Larry. When the farm was sold in 1961, Alf went to work for Alden Berg at the John Deere Farm Store as a mechanic and later worked for Sellin Brothers for 19 years, maintaining the heavy equipment until retiring in 1981.
Alf moved to Detroit Lakes in 1977 and married Darlene Olson on April 21, 1988. Alf was very active in the Rollag Steam Threshers and spent many hours of volunteer work there. He also restored many old tractors, making them shine like new again.
Alf was preceded in death by his parents, Emil and Hulda Goranson; his ex-wife, Alpha Bakke; a sister, Agnes Simenson; as well as his favorite dog, Peppy. He is survived by his wife, Darlene; a son, Larry of Lake Park; two step-children, Terry (Patty) Olson of Detroit Lakes, and Bonnie Eidenschink of Detroit Lakes; sisters, Ellen Speer, Lenora Holmgren, and Lillian Hilgers, ten grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
