Arlene Elizabeth Veronen was born November 19, 1921 in Park Rapids, MN to Henry and Mary (Nunn) Mack. She grew up in the Ponsford area and is a 1939 graduate of Park Rapids High School. She attended one year of college in Bemidji, MN and then worked in support of the war effort. Arlene married the love of her life, Raymond Veronen on December 1, 1945 in Ponsford. Arlene worked at the Greystone Hotel, Blanding's Department Store and White Drug after they left the farm. She retired in 1986. In 1974, Ray and Arlene moved to 207 E. Willow Street in Detroit Lakes and continued to spend time in the summers at the farm gardening, fishing and playing cards with neighbor friends. Ray died August 21, 1994. After spending a couple of years mourning Ray's death, Arlene decided to put her retirement years to good use. She started volunteering at the Nutrition Center, Food Pantry, The Fargo V. A. Center, The V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary and the D.A.V. In 2002, Arlene received the Becker County Outstanding Senior Citizen Award. Some of her interests were crocheting, knitting and the painting and firing of ceramics in her basement kiln. She also enjoyed making pies and distributing them to family and friends. When her health started to fail, her daughter, and son-in-law, Mary and Doug Paulsen, moved to Detroit Lakes to live with Arlene. Doug died June 26, 2014 and Mary died August 18, 2014. On July 11, 2014, with Mary and Arlene's health failing rapidly, Arlene moved to the Frazee Retirement Center.
