Arlie Shodean, age 84, lifelong resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away Friday, January 21, 2011 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, surrounded by his loved ones. A celebration of his life will be held 1:00 p.m. Thursday, January 27, 2011 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held from 5-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at David-Donehower Funeral Home with a prayer service to be held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. A lunch will be hosted at the church following the service for all to attend. Military rites will be performed by the Detroit Lakes American Legion. Interment will be made at Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes in the spring of 2011. David-Donehower Funeral Home is handling the funeral arrangements. To leave online condolences, please visit www.daviddonehower.com. Arlie Duane Shodean was born August 29, 1926 in Audubon Township, Becker County, Minnesota to Oliver and Mable (Malvick) Shodean. He grew up and attended school in Detroit Lakes, graduating with the class of 1945. Following his graduation, Arlie enlisted in the United States Army serving in WWII. He was honorably discharged in October of 1946. Following his honorable discharge, he gained employment with W.W. Walworks in Moorhead. Arlie was united in marriage to Dorothy D. Baker in 1950 in Frazee, MN. They made their home in Moorhead for just over two years where he worked for Northern Drug. He then worked in car sales from 1953 to 1956. The couple then moved to Minneapolis for a time where Arlie worked for Metropolitan Transit as a bus driver. They returned to Detroit Lakes in 1971. He began driving semi for Chelmo Brother's and also served as a substitute mail carrier. In 1972, be became a full-time mail carrier where he worked until his retirement in 1988. Arlie's life was saddened by the passing of his wife, Dorothy in December of 1990. Arlie met Luetta Dankert in Detroit Lakes. They couple was married in 1993 in Detroit Lakes. They made their home in rural Detroit Lakes on the same farmstead where Arlie was born. Arlie enjoyed playing drums in the Happy Wonderers senior band, volunteering with seniors; and was named Outstanding Becker County Senior Citizen in 2006. Arlie also enjoyed working on old cars, traveling; especially to Australia and also spent winters in Yuma, AZ. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, the Knights of Columbus, was a member of the Detroit Lakes American Legion, the Detroit Lakes V.F.W., and the Becker County Council of Aging. He is survived by his wife, Luetta; four children: David (JoLene) Shodean of Detroit Lakes, MN, Audrey (Gerry) Mitchell of Frazee, MN, Amarna (Don) Halbrelder of Bertha, MN, and Carol Creggwell of Moorhead, MN; 8 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy; two grandchildren; one1 brother, LeRoy; and one sister, Luverne.
