He attended St. Michael’s

He then served with the Civilian Conservation Corps in
Wisconsin
prior to joining the U. S. Army where he served in the South Pacific Theater 1942 – 1945.
Art was united in marriage to Reine Kaiser June 4, 1946 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Mahnomen.
They farmed in
Spring
Creek
Township
, rural Ogema.
When they bought their farm there was only a small house and a barn on the farm at the time.
Many improvements were made and, in 1980, they built a new house and continued to milk cows until 1992.
They retired from farming and moved into Ogema in 2004. Reine died in 2005.
While on the farm they accomplished much and were active in the community.
They were named Becker County Farmer and Homemaker of the year in 1972.
Art was also a charter member of the Becker County National Farmers Organization, one of the organizers of the C & O Elevator in Callaway, was a charter member of Ogema Post 9880, Veterans of Foreign Wars and is a charter member of the Mahnomen Council of the Knights Of Columbus.
He enjoyed trapping, playing guitar, dancing, going to town for coffee, playing softball and driving the tractor.
Art is survived by seven sons and a daughter: Philip (Patti) of Waubun, MN, Thomas (JoAnn) of Green Bay, WI, Jerome (Joan) of Mankato, MN, James (Jean) of Brooklyn Park, MN, Paul (JoAnne) of Waubun, MN, Marilyn (William) Knudsen II of Eden Prairie, MN, Patrick (Lori) of Callaway, MN and Mark (Kristi) of Detroit Lakes, MN; 24 grandchildren; 11 great- grandchildren; a brother: Elroy (Cecelia) of Detroit Lakes and a sister: Mary Ann Kaiser of Mahnomen; three sisters-in-law: Marie Kneip of Cold Spring, MN, Audrey Stalboerger of Dilworth, MN and JoAnn Loher of Appleton, MN.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Joseph and a brother, Melvin.
