Audrey M. Johnston, 96, resident of Detroit Lakes, died Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, June 9 at 10:30 AM in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held Sunday, June 8 at David Donehower Funeral Home from 5PM-7PM with a 6:30PM Rosary followed by a 7PM Prayer Service. Interment will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery. Audrey Marie Sauve was born April 3, 1918 in Terrebonne, MN to Eli and DeLima (Parenteau) Sauve. She attended school in Red Lake Falls, MN and later Bemidji State University where she received her teaching certificate. While teaching elementary school in Ogema, Audrey met Paul Johnston. On June 28, 1941, they were united in marriage in Terrebonne. While Paul served in WWII, Audrey worked in the factories to support the war effort. After WWII ended, Audrey and Paul moved to Detroit Lakes. Audrey taught in the Public School system for 40 years. She taught at Washington Elementary in Detroit Lakes for over 30 years retiring in 1980. Following retirement, they wintered in Harlingen, TX with their friends, a time they thoroughly enjoyed. Audrey enjoyed meeting with the retired educators group in Detroit Lakes, she volunteered her time over the years to different organizations, often assisting in the church office where needed. She was a longtime member of the Catholic Daughters and Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes. In her spare time Audrey loved being on the golf course and also enjoyed playing cards, tending to her garden, reading, puzzles, journaling, and crossword puzzles. After 67 years of marriage, Paul passed away on February 18, 2008. Audrey's friends and family enjoyed her sense of humor, her quick wit and welcoming nature. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed. Audrey is survived by her daughter: Sandra (Wade) Hopkins of Sugar Land, TX, son: Stephen (Kathy) Johnston of Hawley, MN, one sister: Leatrice Junglen of Fountain, CO along with six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul (2008) one brother: Donald Sauve and two siblings who died at birth.
