Benton Degerstrom

Benton Charles Degerstrom was born September 3, 2013 at Essentia Health St. Mary's in Detroit Lakes, MN. He was the son of Sean and Amy Degerstrom of Lake Park, MN. Benton, known affectionately as Bennie, was a much anticipated joy to his family. He was born into an enormous extended community of love. In his short time with us here on earth, Bennie taught us many important lessons. First, strength. He was a fighter and fought every one of his 25 days to live for his parents. In that fight, he showed us that we are all stronger than we thought we could be. He taught us joy…pure, all encompassing, and magic in its simplicity. He taught us gentleness, for each other and those around us. Bennie was an old soul, with eyes that were big and intent and could look right through you. He taught us to live in the moment and not to let the little things slip by. Because, in the end those little things make up a very big life. But most of all, Bennie taught us how to love. His beautiful soul opened our hearts wider and made us realize that the very greatest of all God's gift is to love and be loved. We will be forever grateful that we were chosen to be his parents and give thanks every single day. Benton went to heaven on September 28, 2013 in the arms of his parents at Minneapolis Children's Hospital. He and each of his days was a beautiful, miraculous gift that will live on forever. Benton is survived by his parents, Sean and Amy Degerstrom of Lake Park, MN, his grandparents, Darrell and Virginia Degerstrom of Moose Lake, MN, and Wayne and Solveig Kitchell of Ada, MN, and his aunts and uncles Neil and Elizabeth (Nora, Hazel) Rockstad of Hendrum, MN, Tom and Terry (Ross, Jesse, ZhaoBing) Degerstrom of Moose Lake, MN, and Ryan and Angela (Elise, Tyson, Brooklynne, and Emily) Degerstrom of Barnum, MN.
