Bernard Revering

Bernard Joseph Revering was born July 27, 1920 in Perham, MN to Anton and Mary (Kraemer) Revering. A well known outdoor writer and sportsman, he was known to everyone as “Bernie” and his by-line was widely recognized. Bernie received his early education at St. Henry’s Catholic School and then at Perham High School. His family moved to St. Cloud, MN in 1939. He enlisted in the U. S. Army’s Corps of Engineers in 1942 and served with distinction as a front line surveyor and observer in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. Following his discharge in 1946, he attended the University Of Minnesota and subsequently began a lifetime employment with the Minnesota Department of Transportation.


Bernie was united in marriage to Beverly Ann Kennedy June 13, 1953 in St. Paul, MN. While with the MNDOT, his assignments included positions in St. Paul, St. Cloud, and for many years, he was the District Right of Way Engineer for the Detroit Lakes District. As a professional highway engineer, he supervised a staff of technicians, appraisers and acquisition specialists, securing necessary land for highway improvements. He retired in April, 1987 after 41 years of service.


Bernie enjoyed hunting, and fishing in southern Canada, in Minnesota and in the Dakotas seeking waterfowl, deer, and upland game birds. He held life memberships in the Minnesota Society of Professional Engineers. The Becker County Sportsmen’s Club, The Outdoor Writer’s Association of America and the Knights of Columbus. He was also active in the American Legion and the Cormorant Lakes Sportsmen’s Club.


In May 1972, Bernie began writing an outdoor column he chose to name “The Becker County Sportsman”, expertly addressing guns and tackle, sportsmanship, hunting ethics and techniques. The column appeared weekly in the Detroit Lakes Tribune and he also wrote for the Sportsmen’s News in Bemidji, MN, The Outdoor Outlines in Sauk Rapids, The Outdoor News, of Minneapolis and the Minnesota Waterfowl Magazine, among others. His writings and opinions were held in high regard by his many readers.


Survivors include his wife, Beverly of Detroit Lakes, daughters: Laura Jean (Anton) Palodichuk of St. Paul, MN, and Judith Ann (Kurt) Liebe of Portland, OR. Three grandchildren, Elizabeth Palodichuk, Keith Liebe and Erin Liebe, One sister: Mildred (Robert) Nelson of Pine River, MN.


He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Rev. Leo A. Revering and a sister: Catherine Windels
