Bessie Nustad

Bessie Katherine, daughter of Herbert and Bertha (Brown) Lewis, was born November 24, 1922 in Candor Township, Ottertail County, Minnesota. She attended school District 149, a rural country school across the field from where she grew up. After school she assisted on the family farm and worked for other area farmers doing household chores of cleaning, cooking and watching the children. On October 15, 1944 Bessie was united in marriage to Robert Nustad in Detroit Lakes. Shortly after marriage, Bessie and Robert purchased a dairy farm south of Detroit Lakes and started their family. Bessie was a country girl at heart and loved living on the farm. She was very instrumental in the day to day operations. Having experience with household duties, Bessie carried her work ethic to every area of her life. There was nothing she couldn't do. She loved tending to her large garden where she grew produce to sustain her family for the year. After harvesting her fresh produce, Bessie would can and share with family and friends throughout the winter months. Bessie had a generous and caring nature and the true gift of hospitality. No one left her home without being offered something to eat. The aromas of freshly baked bread and pies with a cup of hot coffee are memories that will be cherished forever by her family. Bessie loved being the host especially during Christmas time when all family was able to be together. She enjoyed sewing, crafts, watching Lawrence Welk and Andy Griffith, her cats, along with trying new recipes. Bessie was a wonderful cook, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who always placed her family first before her own needs.

Bessie will be remembered and missed by her children: Mike (Carol), Dave (Pam), Jeff (Lori), Andy (Lori) all of Detroit Lakes, Tim (Colleen) of Hawley, along with 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by sister-in-law: Elaine Lewis of Detroit Lakes and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband Robert (2006), three sisters: Iota Wallace, LuLu Moltzan, and Inez Zitzow and brothers: Leonard Lewis and Alex Lewis.
