Beverly Wething, 84, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Saturday, January 28th at Sanford Health in Fargo, North Dakota. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, February 4th at the United Methodist Church in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Reverend Brenda North officiating. Interment will be in the United Methodist Memorial Garden. Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at the David-Donehower Funeral Home, and at the United Methodist Church one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Beverly Ruth Wething was born August 16, 1927 in Hennepin County, Minnesota, to F. Vere and Blanche (Kenyon) Spears. She was raised and educated in Northeast Minneapolis, and is a 1945 graduate of Edison High School. Following high school, Beverly worked for the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. She also studied voice at the McPhail School of Music in Minneapolis. Beverly married Duane Wething on September 16, 1950, in Minneapolis. The couple initially lived in Waseca, Minnesota, and she continued working for the University. In 1952, they moved to Detroit Lakes, and subsequently purchased the chiropractic practice of Dr. W. B. Whittenberg. She served as office manager for the practice for 14 years.
Beverly was instrumental in establishing the Detroit Lakes Community Choir; a member of Beta Sigma Phi; past president of the Minnesota Chiropractic Auxiliary; and past chairwoman of the Becker County Republican Party. In addition, she was a long-time member of the United Methodist Choir, and served on the United Methodist Church Board until 2011.
She was well known for her solo vocal work in the Detroit Lakes area. In addition to her music, Beverly enjoyed being active with the Detroit Lakes Airport; doing calligraphy for CAP Eagle Flight Certificates; flying with Duane; and participating in the 412 Lakes Antique Car Club, the Saturday morning coffee group at the D.L. Airport, and the Methodist Lunch Bunch. Survivors include her husband, Duane of Detroit Lakes, children: David of Minneapolis, Sue (Dennis) Neitzke of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, Robert (Nancy) of Fairfield, Connecticut, 8 grandchildren: Michael, Rebecca, David, Hilary, Madeleine, Thomas, Margaret and Eli; and a brother, Robert (Elizabeth) Spears of The Villages, Florida. She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Lori Wething. Memorials are preferred to the United Methodist Church Choir or the Detroit Lakes Public Library.
