Burnedean Mae Schenck was born May 1, 1918 in Pillsbury, ND to Ralph and Sadie (DeWandler) Schenck. She grew up in the Pillsbury area and at the age of 14, started as a farm cook for a bonanza farm near Pillsbury. She prepared meals for several farm hands and it was during this time she met her future husband Mandel. On November 14, 1935, Burnedean was united in marriage to Mandel Walen at First Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND. They later moved and purchased land near Ponsford, MN and began farming and raising their family. Mandel passed away in 1968. Burnedean continued to live on the farm and did home health care for her ailing aunt. She also worked for a brief time at the local restaurant in Park Rapids but realized her talents were with home health care, and in doing so went back to caring for others. In 1979, she moved to Detroit Lakes with her son Duane. In 1987, Burnedean made her home at Pleasant View apartments in Detroit Lakes and resided there until 2010. Burnedean was known by her family for her excellent cooking abilities. She made the best apple pie and prepared many wonderful dishes to share with her family and friends. Burnedean enjoyed her gardens while on the farm and later in life enjoyed watching her favorite T.V. shows and listening to country music. Burnedean will be remembered and missed by her sons: Donald (Eunice) Walen of Mora, MN, John (Terri) Walen of Ponsford, MN and Duane (Deanna) Walen of Callaway, MN. She is also survived by six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren, along with one sister; Mary Lou in Anchorage, Alaska. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Mandel and two sisters: Florence Shiflett and LaVern Taylor.
