C. Milton Swedberg, 97, Detroit Laakes, MN, died Friday at Diamond Willow Assisted Living in Detroit Lakes. Private Family services will be held. Carl Milton Swedberg, known as Milt, was born April 9, 1917 in Wheaton, MN to Carl and Annie (Hammerstein) Swedberg. He was raised and educated in Wheaton and is a 1935 graduate of Wheaton High School. He then attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis where he studied Civil Engineering. Milt was united in marriage to Ethel Morken, March 10, 1940 in Morris, MN. From 1941 – 1943, he worked for DuPont in Minneapolis. In 1943, he was an engineer for DuPont on the Manhattan Project in Oakridge, TN.

He served with the U. S. Army 1943 – 1946. He was a Master Sergeant during the Battle of The Bulge in the European Theater Operation with the 292 Engineering Batallion. After his discharge, he worked construction with his Dad in Wheaton. In 1950, Milt and Ethel moved to Detroit Lakes where he started Swedberg Construction Company. While in business, he and his company built many schools, hospitals and government buildings in the tri-state area. He owned and operated the Washington Square Mall in Detroit Lakes 1990 – 1997. Ethel died in March, 1999. Survivors include 2 daughters and a son: Nancy (Roger) Hayle of Detroit Lakes, Diane (Darrell) Lundberg of Branson, MO, Alan (Nancy) Swedberg of Detroit Lakes, 6 grandchildren: Jesten Hayle, Jordan Hayle, Scott Lundberg, Laurie Lundberg, Andrew Swedberg, Annie Swedberg, 2 great-grandchildren: June and Archer Swedberg. In addition to his wife, Ethel, he was preceded in death by a brother, Lyne and a sister, Mildred Martinson.
