Carol Johnson

December 3, 1929 — August 24, 2014

Carol E. Johnson, 84, resident of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, August 24 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes. Memorial Services will be held Sunday, August 31 at 2PM in First Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will take place at the church one hour prior to services. Officiating will be Reverend Wade Dutton. Interment will take place in Lund Lutheran Cemetery, rural Detroit Lakes, MN. Carol Elizabeth (Omundson) Johnson was born December 3, 1929 in Detroit Lakes, MN to Stephen and Anne (Hoghaug) Omundson. She grew up in Detroit Lakes, graduating High School in 1947. Carol was united in marriage to Donald Johnson on September 27, 1951 at First Lutheran Church. For 30 years, Don and Carol worked the Johnson family farm in Richwood Township while raising their six children. Together they embraced all the joys and challenges farm life presented. One of Carols fondest memories of farm life were the years she and Don spent as Key Leaders for the Bakke Boosters 4-H Club. She would reminisce of "Fair Time" and all the preparations like it was a Holiday all in its own.

Carol enjoyed singing in Sweet Adeline Quartets and spent over 30 years as the organist at Lund Lutheran Church. Having grown up singing around the piano with her Mother and siblings, Carol carried that through with her own children. Family gatherings were always complete when there was a gathering of generations singing around the piano.

Carols faith and love of the Lord was "child like" and so clearly evident in the way she served others with the same grace she was daily granted. She had an amazing attitude and outlook on life, always putting a positive spin on any situation. She gifted her family and friends with endless hospitality, making sure there were always fresh baked goods made with love for them to enjoy and handmade quilts to keep them warm. Carol always had time for her grandchildren. She loved nothing more than rocking babies and eventually teaching them to play the games she loved so well, Gin Rummy and Chinese Checkers. She was described by her grandchildren as "the nicest, most caring, loving and peaceful individual known to them, a true example of just how simple and fulfilling life really can be."

Carol is survived by her two daughters, JuliAnne (Nathan) Skrove of Northfield, MN, Jeanne Johnson Bowden (Nevin Tergesen) of Geneseo, ND; three sons, Stephen Johnson, James Johnson, and Daniel "Scruff" (Michelle) Johnson all of Detroit Lakes; daughter-in-law Vikki Johnson of Detroit Lakes; Grandchildren: Marshall, Jesse, Casey, Karli, Josh, Chelsey, Lukas, Dalton, Jessica, Angela, Alex, Andrew, Danny, Samantha, Nevada, Sierra, AddieKay, Elizabeth, and ten great-grandchildren. Carol was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Don (2005), and her son Douglas Johnson (2013).
