Chester Sagmo

Chester “Chet” Sagmo, 93, Detroit Lakes, MN, died Thursday, July 26 at the VA Medical Center in Fargo, ND.

Funeral Services for Chet will be held Tuesday, July 31 at 12pm at David Donehower Funeral Home.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Interment will be held in Bakke Cemetery, rural Detroit Lakes.

Chester, known to everyone as “Chet” was born April 20, 1925 in Winner, MN to Oscar and Christina (Larson) Sagmo.   He attended country school near Winner for a few years before his parents moved to Detroit Lakes.   After he finished school, Chet farmed and raised turkeys with his family.  During the onset of WWII, Chet enlisted with the United States Navy.   He proudly served his country overseas in the South Pacific and after four years of honorable duty, Chet returned home to Detroit Lakes.    Chet was soon united in marriage to Eileen Harthun.  They lived in Dent, MN and the state of Oregon for several years before settling back in the lakes area.   Chet was a businessman.  He owned and operated his own businesses throughout his working career.  In his spare time Chet always enjoyed time with his family, a good cup of coffee and conversations with friends.   Later in years he busied himself tending to his garden.  He was very fond of his pets, especially his two dogs: “Nikki” and “Amy Lou”.

Chet will be missed by his children:  Bonnie (Darcy) Bellefeuille of Vergas, MN, Ron (Tammy) Sagmo of Frazee, MN and Kandy Pederson of West Fargo, ND.  In addition he is survived by 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law:  Marion Zimmerman of Fergus Falls, MN.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Eileen (2011), two daughters:  Kathie Sagmo and DeAnn McWethy, two grandchildren:  Kathie May Nelson and Tony Block along with his siblings:  Melvin Sagmo, Olaf Sagmo and Isabelle Clark.
