Clem TeVogt

Clement H. TeVogt, 87, long time resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Monday, May 17 at St. Mary’s Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes.


Mass of Christian Burial for Clem will be held Friday, May 21 at 12:00 PM in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 20 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 6:30 PM followed by a Parish Vigil at 7:00 PM. Interment will be held at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.


Clem TeVogt was born in Ogema Minnesota on June 10, 1922, to Herman and Elizabeth (Peters) TeVogt. Later the family moved to Saskatchewan, Canada and in 1929 moved to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. He attended Holy Rosary School through the 8th grade and graduated from the Holmes School in 1942. (Presently the Historic Holmes Theatre) He worked for C.B. Goss dime store in downtown Detroit Lakes for 7 years and bought a boat livery business from Fred Weiss. He changed the name to Clem’s Big Dock and later Clem’s Marina which he operated for over 40 years. In the winter, Clem worked for various places; he and his brother did some logging, Ole’ Lind boat works, Detroit Mountain making snow and Winston C. Larson on the surveying crew. He was united in marriage to Yvonne F. Bursau on September 22, 1946, in Detroit Lakes.


Clem enjoyed many activities, which included, the lake cabin, snowmobiling, ice fishing, hunting, volunteering for the food pantry and wood working. Clem made Yvonne a beautiful Grandfather Clock and each of his children a table.. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years. He was a former president of the Holy Rosary Boy Scouts, active on the DL planning commission, city and county park boards, the Elks, Eagles and Becker County Historical Society. Clem was also very robust in doing whatever could be done for the area lakes and waterways including his involvement with Steve Johnston and the  River Navigation Restoration Association which achieved restoring the boat tramway between Muskrat and Lake Sallie.He was also an active partner with the Pelican River watershed. In his life time he owned and operated several businesses along with the dock.  Clem and Yvonne also had the souvenir shop on the beach with home made ice cream bars. (One year he and Yvonne made over 14,000 jumbo ice cream bars selling them from the souvenir shop.) They owned and operated various excursion boats; the Miss Detroit, the Aqua Belle, (where Yvonne served hamburgers, and is now a cabin at Long Bridge resort) the Angler, (a pontoon boat made for fishing trips.) He also owned the Lakeside Lodge & Cabins for 5 years, After selling the dock, Clem and Yvonne Purchased Long Bridge Mobile Home Park from Arlo Weimer in 1976. Clem enjoyed dancing and was an active member of the dancing club for many years. He was the most loving, kind, respectful husband and father anyone could ever have. He was known and respected by many in the lakes area.


Clem will be remembered and missed by his wife, the love of his life of 63 years, Yvonne of Detroit Lakes, three children: Linda Ditterick of Detroit Lakes, Patty Lachowitzer of Roseville, MN and Mark TeVogt of Omaha, Nebraska. Clem is also survived by four grandchildren: Kelli Tibbetts of Detroit Lakes, Ryan Ditterick of Fargo, ND, Shane Abbott of Roselle, IL and Travis Schneider of Minneapolis, MN along with 7 great grand children.


He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings: William, Leo, Al, Amanda, Blanche, Esther, Tony, Alvin and LuVerna and son in-law Jack Ditterick.


He will best be remembered for giving all night speed boat rides after the dances at the pavilion. You can hear him calling out in the microphone; “Come on down to the Lake and enjoy a rollercoaster ride on the water!” Clem TeVogt
