Darvin Piche

November 10, 1931 — March 26, 2015

Darvin R. Piche, 83, Detroit Lakes, MN, died Thursday, March 26, 2015 surrounded by his family and under care of Hospice of the Red River Valley. Darvin Ray Piche was born November 10, 1931 in Mahnomen, MN to Frank and Ruth (Norby) Piche. He attended school in Mahnomen, graduating from Mahnomen High School in 1950. After school, he enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He served several combat missions aboard a B-29 as a bombardier. Following his military career and honorable discharge, Darvin returned home. Soon after, he joined the VFW, becoming a lifetime member. He was united in marriage to his high school classmate Adrienne Nystrom on June 23, 1954. They resided in Grand Forks and later Moorhead. In 1961 they established their home in Detroit Lakes where Darvin worked construction as a concrete block layer, then at Snappy's as a sheet metal worker. While in Detroit Lakes, Darvin and Adrienne owned and operated several businesses over the years. Their first business was in the early 1960's when they purchased Summit Apartments. They also owned and operated Washington Grocery, Piches King Koin Laundromat and Holiday Haven Motel. Darvin retired in 2005. He enjoyed woodworking, going on camping trips, singing with the Barbershoppers, bowling and playing cards. While in high school, Darvin was active on many athletic teams, where he excelled in football and earned All-State Honors. Spending time with his family was very important to him and he always looked forward to their visits and holiday gatherings.

Darvin will be remembered and missed by his wife Adrienne of Detroit Lakes, children: Denise (John) Peters of Grand Rapids, MN, Candyce (John) Steffl of Callaway, Ruth Brodsho of Detroit Lakes, Barbara (Lane) Engberg of Detroit Lakes, Harold (Cindy) Piche of Kenora, Canada and James (Lisa) Piche of Detroit Lakes. In addition he is survived by 23 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and was looking forward to the birth of an additional four great-grandchildren later this year. He is also survived by one sister: Dona Young of Fargo. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Dean and one sister: Dorla Piche.
