David Gary Gunderson was born March 2, 1944 in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. He is the eldest of Mox and Julie Gunderson's five sons. Dave graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1963, spent his freshman year at University of Minnesota Duluth, then transferred to and graduated from Moorhead State University in 1967. Dave met Betty Rust in the summer of 1965 at the Green Door in Detroit Lakes. They were married in 1968.
In 1968 Dave went to work for International Harvester. In 1970 he was hired by Western States Life Insurance in Fargo and began his career in insurance. He founded and operated his own insurance agency, Group Benefit Services, for 25 years. Dave enjoyed singing and playing the guitar, hunting and fishing in western North Dakota, playing cards, snorkeling, teaching his grandkids how to fish, and living on Big Sugar Bush Lake. When his children were young his favorite way to spend time was attending their sport, school and other activities. Dave was a gentle, humble man. His idea of a fun time was Saturday movie night with his wife or playing games and reading books with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Betty; son Erik and his sons Mox and Marty; and daughter Rachel and her husband Michael Tierney and their children Jude and Anne.
