David A. Piechowski, 71, resident of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, May 20 at Sanford Health in Fargo.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, May 27 at 2PM in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be at the church two hours prior to Mass. Interment will be held in Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery. David Anthony Piechowski was born June 7, 1942 in New London, MN to Anton "Tony" and Helen (Fry) Piechowski. He graduated high school in Browns Valley, MN. He attended junior college in Onamia, MN at Crosier Seminary. While there, David played drums in a local band called "Los Hermanos". He later attended college at Dunwoody Institute completing his degree in heating and refrigeration. He owned and operated Dave's Refrigeration in Browns Valley for a few years before accepting a position with Eid's Refrigeration Company in Willmar, MN. While in Willmar, David played in a local band called "Bob and the Broncos". It was during this time he met Jane Braaten who was the bass guitar player in the same band. On June 19, 1969 David and Jane were united in marriage in Willmar. They resided in Greeley, CO where David worked for the street department. David was responsible for developing the first automated traffic lighting system in Greeley and was always proud of that accomplishment. Dave's career path shifted once again when he accepted a position with Front Range Community College, Larimer Campus in Ft. Collins, CO as an instructor for Refrigeration and Cooling. During his time as a teacher, Dave knew this was his calling. Dave and Jane later moved to Doran, MN where he taught Environmental Systems at NDSCS in Wahpeton, ND. He finished his career at Minnesota State Community and Technical College here in Detroit Lakes, retiring in 1996. Dave was instrumental in developing the curriculum for the heating and cooling trades at the various schools he taught at. He enjoyed watching his former students succeed at their chosen careers and throughout the years was a wise counselor to many. In his spare time, Dave enjoyed being outdoors. He loved to hunt, fish and cook but most importantly spending time with his family.
Dave is survived by his wife, Jane of Detroit Lakes, one daughter: Nicole Piechowski of Detroit Lakes, one son: Anthony "Tony" Piechowski of Detroit Lakes, two brothers: Paul (Val) Piechowski of Rochester, MN and Otto (Janet) Piechowski of Lexington, KY. He is preceded in death by his parents.
