David Vareberg

February 11, 1958 — October 6, 2022

Detroit Lakes

David Allen Vareberg, of Detroit Lakes, passed away peacefully at home on October 6, 2022 with his beloved Lori and Little Frankie by his side.

Born in Detroit Lakes, David spent his youth in southern Minnesota, growing up in Mankato and Prior Lake. Possessing an entrepreneurial and innovative spirit from an early age, David often procured numerous neighborhood jobs growing up and always followed different projects. After the family returned to the Detroit Lakes area where Marvin Sr. had purchased a farm and started a well drilling business, David left home at 15 years old. With a nomadic soul, David wandered different places and employed different professions becoming a Kirby vacuum salesman, starting his own taping and drywall business, graduating in Automotive Mechanics at the Detroit Lakes Tech school, and finally becoming a prominent pawnbroker in Detroit Lakes for the remainder of his life. He was characterized by his innovative vision, always ahead of the times and on the cutting edge of whatever was mechanically and technologically produced. Constantly pursuing different directions in life, he was sharp-witted, self-taught, stiff-backed, steadfast, and master of whatever he touched. His wisecrack humor always accompanied his attitudes and sentiments. Akin to a sunbaked motorcycle cowboy, this long-haired country boy favored things in life both good and bad such as the roll of the dice, the companionship of a good dog, and the thunder of a Harley rolling down the blacktop. As every Vareberg son is known to be, he was a walking contradiction with a heart of gold, determined that his way, whether it was right or wrong, was the only one worth traveling. Towards the end, David confessed that cancer was one of the best things to affect his life. For him, the illness would become his final Cross and the clarity needed to restore his love for Jesus Christ. Like the Prodigal Son returning home, David was welcomed by Our Father in heaven.

He is survived in death by his mother Diana J. Vareberg, children Becky (Brad) Arends, Matt (Lacey) Blauert, grandchildren, Logan, Kenya, Jordan, Bella, Aria, Cally. Brothers, Randy (Teri), James (Nancy), Scott (Shawna), Richard (JoAnne), Michael, Marvin Jr. (Sarah), sister, Catherine (Jerry), Beloved Lori, Lori’s children Paul, Randy, Dylan, special girl Emmerie Ann, little Frankie, and many loving Nieces, Nephews, Aunts, and Uncles.

He is preceded in death by his father, Marvin (Whitey) Vareberg.

The family would like to thank the dedicated and caring staff of Red River Valley Hospice especially Tiffany for providing loving and compassionate care during his last days.
