Donald E. Maristuen, born on November 7, 1952, in Northwood, ND, passed away peacefully on October 9 2024, surrounded by his devoted family. Don leaves behind a legacy of love, community, and unforgettable memories cherished by all who know him.
A graduate of Bemidji High School in 1970, Don furthered his education at Bemidji University, where the foundations of his character were laid. He embarked on a fulfilling career with People's Natural Gas in 1972, a journey that spanned 38 years and saw him rise through the ranks to become a respected Regional Manager. His dedication and hard work brought him and his family to Detroit Lakes, MN, in 1994, and he spent five years traveling for work before retiring in 2010. In retirement, Don reveled in the joys of life, finding immense fulfillment in spending intentional time with family and simply enjoying the quiet joys of retired life.
Don was not only a devoted family man but also an active member of his community. His compassion shone through his promises to his beloved wife, Carol, ensuring she would never feel alone, especially during the times when their youngest son, Chad, ventured off to college. His spirit of service was evident in his numerous contributions; he was a proud member of the Jaycees in Hoyt Lakes for many years, a dedicated secretary for the Lutheran Church in Aurora, and a fireman and EMT for a decade. His commitment to community governance included participation in the zoning committee in Detroit Lakes and serving as president of the Long Lake Association.
An avid lover of the outdoors, Don found joy in fishing and hunting. He embraced the simple pleasures of life, often gathering loved ones around a bonfire, sharing stories and laughter. Having lived on the lake for 30 years, pontoon rides were among his favorite pastimes, as were meticulously caring for his immaculate lawn—a testament to his diligent and hardworking nature.
Don's family remains as a testament to his legacy. He is survived by his cherished wife, Carol Maristuen [Walczak], and their children: Jimmi Trihey [Steph Biv], Joshua Maristuen, Travis Maristuen, and Chad Maristuen [Courtney Maristuen]. His precious grandchildren, Nevaeh Trihey, Harper Maristuen, and Mason Maristuen, were a source of boundless joy and pride in his life. Don is also remembered by his siblings: brother Dale Maristuen [Joanne Maristuen]; sisters Barb Edwards [James Edwards] and Jody Hanes; sisters-in-law Cynthia Paavola [Glen Paavola] and Tammy Royseth [Trig Royseth]; and brother-in-law Daniel Walczak.
In the hearts and minds of those who knew him, Don will always be remembered as a beacon of love, kindness, and community spirit. He has been reunited with those who were departed before him: his father, Laverne Maristuen; his mother, Dorothy Maristuen [Getz] [Richard]; in-laws Chet Walczak [Genevieve Walczak] and Walter Walczak.
As we honor Donald E. Maristuen’s memory, let us carry forward the values he embodied—a deep love for family, a commitment to community, and a joy for the little things that make life truly beautiful. His impact on our lives will forever remain.
