Dorothy M. Hanselman, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, formerly of LuVerne, IA, died Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at The Cottage, Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Funeral Services for Dorothy will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday, July 23, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home Chapel in Detroit Lakes and on Friday, July 24, 2009 at 11:00 AM in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in LuVerne, IA. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of services on Thursday at Emmanuel Nursing Home and also one hour prior to services on Friday, July 24 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Dorothy Mae Lindebak was born on July 29, 1916 in Ellsworth, Iowa to Jesse A. and Laura (Sandford) Lindebak. When Dorothy was a year old, the family moved to LuVerne, IA where they continued to reside until 2005. She graduated from LuVerne High School in 1933. On January 14, 1947, she was united in marriage with Charles K. Hanselman in Davenport, IA. They resided in LuVerne on the Hanselman family farm and took over the farming operations. Dorothy worked at the Security State Bank in LuVerne for 35 years before retiring in December of 1981. Throughout life, Dorothy and Charles were active members of Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in LuVerne, where she was active in many of the church organizations, including Ladies Aid and Mission Mites. She was also active in the American Legion Auxiliary. Dorothy served as secretary for the LuVerne School Board for several years, retiring in 80’s. In 1978, they retired from farming and moved into LuVerne. During their retirement years, Dorothy and Charles traveled throughout the United States on bus tours. They also spent several weeks each year fishing at resorts in Minnesota. Together, they moved into assisted living at Emmanuel Community in Detroit Lakes in September of 2005.
Dorothy will be greatly missed by her husband, Charles of Detroit Lakes, son; Dennis (Janet) of Detroit Lakes and her grandchildren: Todd (Emily) Hanselman of Eagan, MN and Kara Hanselman of Minneapolis, MN. She is also survived by one brother, Edward Lindebak of Keota, IA, her sister-in-law; Norma (Raymond) Johnson of Manhattan, KS, along with several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, great grandnieces and great grandnephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Ferne Neal and an infant brother, Lawrence.
