Dorothy Schmidt

Dorothy L. Schmidt, 96, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died peacefully Friday, June 26, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes, MN. A Celebration of Dorothy’s Life will take place Friday, July 3, 2009 at 10:00 AM in the Emmanuel Nursing Home Chapel, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Friday at Emmanuel Nursing Home. Interment will take place at Mound Cemetery in Ortonville, MN.


Dorothy Louise Donk was born August 25, 1912 on the family farm near Correll, MN to Henry and Ethel (Grampry) Donk. She was raised and educated in Correll graduating from Correll Public High School in 1930. Dorothy continued her education at Anchor Hospital, graduating in 1932 with a degree in nursing. She worked for Big Stone Hospital near Ortonville and also for hospitals in Minneapolis and Chicago. On August 13, 1940, Dorothy was united in marriage with Sidney A. Schmidt in Correll. They made their home in New Richland, MN. Sidney enlisted in the United States Army during the outbreak of WWII, which made them relocate to New York City, New York. While Sidney was away at war, Dorothy worked at the New York City Hospital. After the war, Dorothy and Sidney moved to Springfield, Minnesota. Dorothy commuted to Redwood Falls to work at the Redwood Falls Hospital before taking a job as the surgical nurse in Springfield. From 1961 to 1975, Dorothy was the Hospital Administrator for the Springfield Community Hospital, which is now associated with Mayo Clinic. She retired in 1975. Dorothy and Sidney moved to Cotton Lake to enjoy their summer retirement years and wintered in Mexico and Yuma, AZ. Sidney died July 19, 2001.


Throughout her life, Dorothy enjoyed traveling to see her children, playing Bridge with friends, reading her novels, crossword puzzles, crewel work, and was known for her talent at cooking where every dish was a main entrée. Dorothy enjoyed life but most importantly spending time with her children, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


Dorothy will be remembered and deeply missed by her two children, Blace (Myrna) Schmidt of Rochert, MN and Linda (Bob) Brockmann of Rochert, MN. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Paul (Nicole) Schmidt of Becker, MN, Jeff Brockmann (Shane Swanson) of Minneapolis, MN, Pamela (Shayne) Davidson of Fargo, ND, Todd (Nancy) Brockmann of West Fargo, ND and Mark (Ellie) Brockmann of Brooklyn Park, MN; along with seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Albert DeWall; husband, Sidney (2001); sisters, Lucille Lundberg and Donna Cowdrey; step-sister, Marian Schmeichel and step-brother Gardner DeWall.
