Edward G. Smith, 91, resident of Detroit Lakes , MN , died Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes , MN .

Edward Gustav Smith was born June 13, 1921 in Antioch , Illinois to Edward M. and Minnie (Mills) Smith. He attended a small one room school as a young boy and graduated from Antioch High School . From 1942-1945, Ed enlisted into the United States Army and proudly served his country overseas during WWII. With his sharp memory, Ed was able to retrace every city and stop he made while overseas providing family and friends a sneak peek into his journey during that time and era. He felt extremely honored to have had the opportunity to not only serve is country but to be a part of history. Following his honorable discharge, Ed owned and operated a resort on Grasslake near his hometown of Antioch , IL . He sold this resort in the mid 1950's and worked as a carpenter until his retirement. He was also a hunting and fishing guide for several years and enjoyed his hunting excursions and fishing trips throughout North America. In 1990, Ed moved to Minnesota to be close to his extended family. This brought many years of joy and also a new adventure for Ed. His stories about life and friendship shared will be remembered forever and missed by his family and many friends. Ed is survived by one sister: Kathern Kanka of Antioch, IL, several nieces and nephews and his "Richwood Gang" consisting of eight great-great nieces and nephews: Jacob and Jayna Walther, Christopher, Lizzie and Mia Mohr, Ava, Bob and Susie Schoenberger. He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Esther Dunworth, Margret Walsh and Louise Walther.
