Edythe McDonald

March 12, 1950 — February 8, 2017

Edythe M. McDonald, 66, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died peacefully February 8, 2017 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. Memorial Services for Edythe will be held Saturday, February 18 at 10am in David Donehower Funeral Home. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Edythe Margaret Schwalbe was born March 12, 1950 in Dickenson, ND to Edwin and Anneale (Osadchy) Schwalbe. She attended school in Sykeston, ND, graduating with the class of 1968. That summer she started working as a trainer for Rough Riders Ranch in Woodstock, NY and Medora, ND.

She furthered her education at Minot State University earning her Bachelor of Science degree in Education, graduating in 1973. She later returned to Minot State and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1983. During her working career, Edythe worked as a Regional Coordinator in Devils Lake, ND and Carrington, ND as a special education teacher. She also worked as a remedial reading teacher in North Dakota and Montana. While teaching in Carrington, ND, Edythe continued her love for horses, instructing new riders and training horses for a local ranch. Edythe loved every horse she owned, but her favorites were Lad and Birdie. Birdie was special to Edythe because she purchased it from the wild mustang herd in Theodore Roosevelt National Park as a colt. During her college years, Edythe loved singing in the choir at Minot State University and while in Carrington, she was active with the local Jaycee's chapter. Edythe is survived by her children: Wade (Kara) McDonald, Nathalie McDonald and Chad McDonald. She is also survived by three brothers: Francis Schwalbe, Lyle Schwalbe, Charles Schwalbe and one sister: Patricia Schwalbe along with 8 grandchildren: Zachary Erdman, Alexander Erdman, Devin McDonald, Christian Haaland, Kaitlyn McDonald, Kaia McDonald, Emma Haaland and Kyle McDonald, two great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. She is preceded in death by her parents.
