Eldred "Al" Scherer, 87, Detroit Lakes, MN, died peacefully surrounded by his children October 11 at Essentia Health- Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes. A Private Mass of Christian Burial will be held. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery. Eldred Albert Scherer, known to all as "Al" was born September 8, 1929 in St. Cloud, MN. He grew up on his parent's farm in St. Joseph, MN with his seven siblings. In 1948, he graduated from St. Cloud Tech High School. Al was honorably discharged from the United States Naval Reserves in 1956. Al was united in marriage to Betty Hulke in 1954 and stayed happily married until her death in 2007. In addition to owning grocery stores in Edina and Richfield, MN, Al worked for the Great Northern Railroad, Burlington Northern Railroad, and as a conductor for Amtrak. Al and his family moved from Bloomington, MN to Detroit Lakes in 1976 where he retired in 1991. He and Betty spent a number of winters in Pharr, TX following retirement. Al enjoyed golfing, fishing, playing cribbage, and watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. Al and his late wife Betty were accomplished bowlers having participated in several state and national tournaments. He was an active member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and John Bridges American Legion Post 15 of Detroit Lakes. Al is survived by his six children: Cindy (Tom) Maag of Ramsey, MN; David (Kathy) Scherer of Prior Lake, MN; Beth (Paul) Renner of Detroit Lakes, MN; Tom (Karon) Scherer of Sartell, MN; Cathy Scherer of Grand Forks, ND; Mark (Madge) Scherer of Ramsey, MN, and 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sister Dorene Rennie of Waite Park, MN; brother Ervin (Dorothy) Scherer of St. Cloud, MN; and sister-in-law Eileen Scherer of St. Cloud, MN. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, four brothers: Eugene, Marvin, Wilbert and Norman; sister-in-law Myra and brother-in-law Jerome Rennie.
