Ellen K. Sandman, 84, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, died Saturday, October 29 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 2, at the Assembly of God Church in Detroit Lakes, Jeff Culver, officiating. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Friends may call 4:00 - 8:00 PM Tuesday with a prayer service at 5:00 PM at the David-Donehower Funeral Home. The visitation will continue 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Ellen Katherine Sandman was born November 13, 1926 in Pelican Rapids, MN to Oscar and Sophie (Anderson) Olson. She was confirmed at Cormorant Lutheran Church and educated at Pelican Rapids Public Schools. Ellen attended Moorhead State Teachers College in Moorhead, MN. Upon receiving her degree from Moorhead State, she went to North Central Bible College in Minneapolis, MN and Central Bible College in Springfield, MO., majoring in Missions. After graduation, Ellen taught at Lakeview Township School in rural Detroit Lakes and at a one room school near Audubon. She also taught 4th grade at Rossman School in Detroit Lakes for 9 years. Ellen was united in marriage to Roland Sandman June 11, 1960 at the Assembly of God in Detroit Lakes. They made their home in rural Detroit Lakes.
Ellen's hobbies were cooking, sewing, crocheting, knitting and baking. She attended Detroit Lakes Assembly of God where Ellen taught Sunday School for many years and was Sunday School Superintendent. Ellen was also actively involved with the Gideons International. She loved her Lord and enjoyed reading her Bible everyday.
Ellen and Roland loved to travel, visiting Norway and Sweden, as well as throughout the United States. To Ellen, her family was her greatest joy and they made many trips to Houston, TX to visit their daughter Valerie and her family. Survivors include her husband, Roland of Detroit Lakes, a daughter, Valerie (Ralph) Sanders of Houston, TX, two grandchildren: Tristan and Emma Sanders of Houston, TX and a sister: Dorothy Mae (Art) Haverkamp of Hibbing, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Ordean.
