Elna Mae Brahmer, age 93, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 1, 2017, at Oak Crossing Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 6, 2017, at David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes with visitation to begin one hour prior to the service. Burial will be made at Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes.
Elna was born May 24, 1923, in Lake Park, MN, to Magnus and Amanda (Wilson) Sanstad. She grew up in Lake Park where she graduated from Lake Park High School with the class of 1941. Following her schooling, she worked for the Becker County Attorney's Office for a number of years. Elna was united in marriage to Earl Brahmer on June 25, 1944 at Lake Park. The couple purchased a farm in rural Detroit Lakes where they made their home. They raised three children: Sharon, Janet and Donald. Elna enjoyed farm life and was happy to help on the farm. Elna also worked at Blanding's, Coast to Coast and Bergen's in Detroit Lakes. Elna was a member of the homemakers group, 4-H leader, Sunday teacher and a member of the Ladies Aide at Lund Lutheran Church. She later became a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. In the early 1970s, Earl and Elna sold the farm and moved into Detroit Lakes. Elna's life was saddened by Earl's passing in 1977. Elna enjoyed quilting, reading, knitting and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Elna is survived by 2 daughters: Sharon Leegard of Detroit Lakes, and Janet Cossette of Detroit Lakes; 5 grandchildren: Paul (LaDonna) Cossette of Medora, ND, Scott (Dawn) Leegard of Detroit Lakes, Carla (Tracy) Halvorson of Hawley, MN, James (LeighAnn) Cossette of Audubon, MN, and Julie Berger of Moorhead, MN; 9 great grandchildren: Chelsea, Ashley, Brady, Ryan, Ethan, Mackenize, Kyndra, Garret and Ava; and numerous nieces and nephews. Elna was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Brahmer; son, Donald Brahmer; great granddaughter, Emma Halvorson; sons-in-law, Jim Leegard and Harold Cossette; 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
