Emitt Leach

Emitt Leach, age 91, passed away Saturday, December 31, 2016, at Ecumen Emmanuel Nursing Home with his family at his side. There will be a time of visitation from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, January 5, 2017, at David-Donehower Funeral Home with a prayer service to take place at 6 p.m. A private burial will be made at a later date. Emitt was born December 30, 1925, to Samuel and Viola Leach in Dupree, South Dakota. At an early age, he moved with his family to a ranch near Arnold, Nebraska where he attended school. After serving in the Army, he returned to the ranch for several years. In 1964, he met and married Betty Jo Velebra and the couple moved to Detroit Lakes, MN. Emitt traveled as a salesman for Acme Boot Company until his retirement. Emitt is survived by his wife, Betty Leach of Detroit Lakes, two sons: Bob Leach of Detroit Lakes and Joe (Deb) Leach of Detroit Lakes; two daughters: Sharon Mattson of Moorhead, MN, and Colene (Delbert) Hearn of Porterville, CA; six grandchildren: Amy (John) Hanawalt of Seattle, WA, Sarah Leach of Detroit Lakes, Michael Leach and Matthew Leach of Detroit Lakes, Heather (David) Grimsley and Jarred Hearn of Porterville, CA; along with several great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; one brother, Marvin Leach of Lumberton, TX; and one sister, Eloise Beckius of Denver, CO. Emitt was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Emil, who died at birth; one sister, Roberta Austin; and one grandson, Jason Hearn. Emitt was an avid golfer. He enjoyed horses, rodeos and country music. He was a talented macrame chair builder and sold many of his creations. The family would like to thank Emmanuel Nursing Home Staff and Hospice of the Red River Valley for their loving care of Emitt. Please consider them in lieu of flowers.
