Evelyn V. Kjono, 87, of Detroit Lakes, MN died Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. The Funeral Service will be 2:00 PM, Monday, May 18 at Grace Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes with Reverend Eric Lemonholm officiating. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery, Detroit Lakes. Friends may call 4:00 to 6:00 PM with a V.F.W. Auxiliary service and Prayer Service at 5:00 PM Sunday, May 17 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.
Evelyn Viola (Hovland) Kjono was born June 12, 1921 at Rothsay, MN to Arthur S. and Milla (Watterud) Hovland. She was baptized and confirmed at South Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Rothsay. Evelyn was united in marriage with Calmer Kjono August 15, 1937 near Rothsay. They farmed at Rothsay for 13 years before moving to Pelican Rapids, MN in 1950. Evelyn had worked at Simpson and Rybeck Bakery and a short time at the Recreation Center, then at Swan’s Drug for 17 years. She then moved to Detroit Lakes and was employed at Swifts for 17 years before retiring. Evelyn and Calmer divorced in 1964.
Evelyn belonged to the V.F.W. Auxiliary and was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and working puzzles with her friends at the Silver Birch apartments in Detroit Lakes.
Evelyn is survived by two daughters, Dorothy (Allen) Waasdorp of Pelican Rapids, Ruby (Robert) Woodland of Festus, MO; seven grandchildren, Allen, Jr., Gary, Steven, Daniel, Mike, Theresa, Donna, and several great-grandchildren; sister, Ardis Brenk of Frazee, MN. She was preceded in death by one brother, Sander; one sister, Lyla Jorgenson; two brothers-in-law, Jerold Brenk and Morgen Jorgenson; and a very special companion, Earl Bull.
