Evelyn Simpson

July 2, 1918 — August 14, 2014

Evelyn Beatrice Correll, the daughter of Prentice and Olga (Evers) Correll was born July 2, 1918 in Baker, MT. Her siblings were: Eileen (Van Dame), Marie (Sokness), Berniece (Daddario), Lloyd, Merle and Audrey (Dobbs).

Her early years were spent in Baker, MT, Beach, ND and rural Fargo, ND. After graduating from Moorhead State Campus School in 1936, she worked at various farms which included the Simpson farm where she met Richard; it was love at first sight. She then attended Interstate Business College in Fargo and later worked at Interstate Seed & Grain Company in Fargo as a radio broadcaster delivering the market report. Richard served in the US Navy from 1939-1945 on the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. Evelyn often spoke of how difficult it was to read in the local newspaper that the ship had been supposedly sunk on seven different occasions. On September 3, 1943, she married Richard Sterling Simpson at Trinity Lutheran Church of Moorhead, MN. They honeymooned at the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Detroit Lakes and danced at the Pavilion. After the war, Richard and Evelyn lived in Washington, D.C. and Tarpon Springs, FL before moving to Moorhead, MN where they worked and raised two children. Evelyn worked as a secretary in the Engineering Department at the VA Hospital in Fargo, ND for twenty years. Upon retirement in 1979, Richard and Evelyn built their dream home on Franklin Lake near Pelican Rapids, MN. It was around this time Evelyn realized her need for a Savior in a real and personal way. She trusted Christ as her Savior and received eternal life. She enjoyed baking, playing cards with family and friends and loved being part of the Zion quilters. Evelyn will always be fondly remembered for her quick wit. They enjoyed traveling and spent several winters in Arizona and Texas. In October of 2004, they moved to Detroit Lakes, MN where they enjoyed the lake view and spending time with family and friends. They were members of Zion Lutheran Church on Franklin Lake since 1979. The love of her life, Richard, passed away the fall of 2006. Even though Evelyn had several medical setbacks during the last few years, she was able to stay in her condo until her death. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother and will be truly missed. Her family would like to thank all of her caregivers including Home Instead, Oak Crossing and Hospice of the Red River Valley. Evelyn is survived by one son: Larry Simpson of Fargo, ND; one daughter: Linda Wiedmann of Detroit Lakes, MN; three grandchildren: Todd (Rhonda) Wiedmann of Audubon, MN; David Wiedmann of Phoenix, AZ; and Laura Wiedmann of Phoenix, AZ; three great-grandchildren: Brody, Chase and Rece Wiedmann; and her brother: Lloyd (Beverly) of Moorhead, MN. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard, five siblings: Eileen, Marie, Berniece, Merle and Audrey and one son-in-law: Dean Wiedmann.
