Evelyn "Evie" Wood, 98, resident of Detroit Lakes died Tuesday, June 23, 2015 in Ecumen-Emmanuel Nursing Home. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, July 8 at 11AM in the Congregational Church-United Church of Christ in Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held Tuesday, July 7 at Emmanuel Nursing Home Chapel, in Detroit Lakes with a Prayer Service to follow. Interment will be held in Oak Grove Cemetery.
Evie was born January 26, 1917 in Detroit Lakes to Asa E. and Cora (Norris) Hoffman. She graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1935. Evie was united in marriage to Sigwel Wood September 2, 1951. She worked at Price's Jewelry for a short time and as a secretary in Sig's law office. Evie had an adventurous spirit and a true zest for life. Her favorites were gardening, skiing (one of the first skiers at the "old" Detroit Mountain), snowmobiling, fishing, camping, water skiing and hiking in the mountains. She loved playing Bridge and working on her pet hobby of making stained glass pictures. She and Sig were worldwide travelers.
She was active in the Congregational Church (which she joined in 1933) serving as Deaconess, Guild member and Sunday school teacher. She was a Pink Lady at St. Mary's Hospital, was a Camp Fire Girls leader and was a charter member of the Damien Society. Evie enjoyed cross country skiing with a group of women called WWWDXC for over 25 years.
Family and friends enjoyed spending vacations with Sig and Evie at their Big Floyd Lake home. Evie encouraged and convinced others to join her swimming, water skiing, snow skiing, skating, fishing and snowmobiling. Evie is survived by her daughter: Pam (Les) Anderson of Detroit Lakes, granddaughter: Lori (Marty) Waller of Detroit Lakes, grandson: Mark Anderson of Houston, TX, great-grandchildren: Jack and Amy Waller and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents Asa and Cora Hoffman, herhusband, Sigwel, three sisters: Lorraine, Phyllis and Joanne and one brother: Norris. Memorial donations may be made to the Congregational Church in Detroit Lakes, the North Dakota Diabetes Camp Sioux, Sucker Creek Preserve, Tamarac Refuge or Emmanuel Nursing Home.
