Fern H. Thompson, 81, Callaway, MN, died Monday, December 12 at her home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Saturday, December 17 at Assumption Catholic Church, Callaway, MN, Fr. Xavier Ilango, officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Callaway. Friends may call 4:00 – 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM Friday at David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. The visitation will continue at the church 1 hour prior to the mass on Saturday. Fern Hazel Marion Thompson was born January 31, 1930 in Fargo, ND to Louis and Elizabeth (Lundin) Johnson. She moved with her family to rural Callaway, MN as a young girl where she was educated in rural Callaway schools. Fern was united in marriage to Charles "Sonny" Thompson December 27, 1951 in Detroit Lakes. Following Sonny's discharge from the military, they lived in Moorhead, MN. They moved to rural Callaway, MN in 1961 and, in 1963, moved to the home where she has spent the rest of her life. Fern was employed with Swift and Company in Detroit Lakes 1967 – 1980. Sonny died in 1963.
Fern enjoyed her family and cherished time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed crocheting afghans and doilies, making rag rugs and quilts, gardening, reading, baking, cooking and playing cards.Fern dearly loved and pampered her pets. Survivors include her children: Charles (Joanne) of Detroit Lakes, Cheryl (Rob) Erickson of Bemidji, MN, Joseph (Terri) of Callaway, MN, Jeff (Kathy) of Mahnomen, MN, 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, siblings: Esther Mitchell – Frazee, MN, Leland Johnson of Waukesha, WI, Ray "Kenny" (Elly) Johnson of Detroit Lakes, Gladys Braun of Detroit Lakes, Ardyce (Gene) Schouviller of Detroit Lakes, a sister-in-law: Irene Johnson of Detroit Lakes. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, a son: Robert, a grandson: Dennis, a granddaughter: Destiny Person, brothers: Erwin, Merl and Gordon.
