Floyd Solmon

September 24, 1921 — September 26, 2015

Floyd A Solmon was born the youngest of 10 children on September 24, 1921 in Willow Lake, SD to John and Sarah (Faulkner) Solmon. When he was 1 year, they moved by covered wagon to Kay's Corner east of White Earth in Becker County. When Floyd was 3 years old, his father died of a heart attack while cutting up a tree. The family lived there for about another year until their home burned in a chimney fire when Floyd was 4. Floyd grew up in the Richwood, MN area.

Floyd and his brothers loved to play music and Floyd learned to play his brother- Keith's banjo when he was 9 years old and started playing for dances and house parties when he was 12. When he was 18 he entered the CCC and lived and worked in the camp until he was 21. Floyd served in the Army during WW-II for 4 years and was stationed in North Carolina, Georgia, Colorado, and New Jersey. He married Marie A Braun on May 12, 1945, after their marriage they returned to Georgia until his discharge on February 14, 1946. After Floyd's discharge they returned to Callaway, and then on to Underwood, ND., where he worked for a farmer during the spring and summer. Later that same year, they returned to their own farm west of Callaway. In the Summer of 1953, Floyd and Marie were on the move and moved to California where he worked in the construction field. In 1954, they returned to Callaway. In 1955 they moved on to Flint Michigan. Floyd worked for General Motors and went to school for TV Repair. In the summer of 1960 the family returned to Callaway where they owned and operated Callaway Hardware, TV Repair and Cal-Gas and built and operated the Callaway Laundromat. After selling the hardware store, Floyd worked in the waterline and sewer construction business and they had a Shaklee distributorship before retiring to Lawton, Oklahoma. In 2001, when Marie's health started to fail, they returned to the Menahga, MN. In 2005, they moved into Detroit Lakes where they were closer to more relatives. In 2006, they moved into Lamplighter Manor where they spent many afternoons and evening playing dice with their neighbors. Floyd moved to the Pelican Valley Nursing Home in March of this year. Marie passed away on October 1, 2012. Floyd was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. Floyd is survived by: Eugene Solmon, Cleveland OH, Martin (Mary) Solmon of Detroit Lakes, Virginia (Richard) McDougall of Detroit Lakes, Lauretta (Daniel Kapphahn) of Detroit Lakes area, Timothy (Renee) Solmon of Pelican Rapids, Paul (Julie) Solmon of New Hope, Vincent Solmon of Tacoma, WA, Patrick (Loretta) Solmon of Scurry TX, Arnold (Sheryl) Solmon of Montevideo, and Theresa Johnson of Detroit Lakes. He is also survived by 43 grandchildren and 74 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren, Brother-in law Ben Braun of Detroit Lakes and Sister-in-law Rose Willey of Fridley. Floyd was preceded in death by his wife Marie, his parents, four brothers, five sisters and grandchildren: Rebecca McDougall, Kari Solmon, Travis Solmon, Gabriel Solmon, Adam Olson and Keith Solmon.
