Friends may call 1 hour prior to the mass on Wednesday at the nursing home chapel. Frederick Walter Hayes, known as "Papa", was born November 13, 1925 in St. Petersburg, FL to Frederick and Margaret (Binder) Hayes, Sr. He grew up in Minneapolis, MN where he graduated from high school. In April, 1943, Fred proudly enlisted in the U. S. Navy where he was a torpedoman on the U.S.S. Essex Aircraft Carrier. He was honorably discharged in 1946. After earning his accounting degree, Fred married Eleanore Marie Joseph in Minneapolis on September 16, 1946. They spent the next 68 years by eachother's sides enjoying life together. Fred worked as a manager and accountant for Hobart Federal retiring in 1978 after 35 years of employment. Fred was an avid outdoorsman. He loved hunting, fishing, spending time at their lake home, driving his tractor and walking the fields on their small farm. He was also a gifted "Jack of All Trades". His biggest achievement was building the family lake home on Island Lake near Crosby, MN. In later years, Papa spent happy times playing Santa Claus bringing smiles to many children. The greatest joy for Papa came from his grandchildren. He loved watching them in their various sports and spending time with them hunting, fishing and enjoying the outdoors. Survivors include his wife, Eleanore of Detroit Lakes, 3 daughters: Denise Hayes of Swanie, GA, Lisa Provo of Detroit Lakes, MN, Robin Hayes of Lawrenceville, GA, a son, Kevin, address unknown, 6 grandchildren, a brother: James "Bud" Hayes in OR, a sister: Betty McMullen of Baldwin, WI. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Alisha Marie Provo and 2 sisters: Margie and Jacqueline.
