Fred H. Hein, 86, Detroit Lakes, MN, died Wednesday, November 3rd at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM Saturday, November 13th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, Pastor Dan Babine, officiating. Interment services will be 1:00 PM Monday, November 15th at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN.
Friends may call 5:00 – 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM Friday at David-Donehower Funeral Home and at the church 1 hour prior to the service on Saturday.
Frederick Hilton Hein was born July 28, 1924 in Mayer, Minnesota to Frederick and Hulda (Mesenbring) Hein. He attended Mayer Lutheran Academy and is a 1942 graduate of Waconia (MN) High School. He served with the U. S. Navy 1942 to 1946 where his love of flyingbegan. Following his discharge, he worked at the airport in Devil’s Lake ND. Wadena, MN. Fred was united in marriage to Aletha Neuman July 24, 1947 in Wadena, MN. During his working career, he was a sales representative for H. J. Heinz Company, A. O. Smith Harvestore, Minnesota Valley Breeders and Minnesota Valley Storage.
From 1961 to 1968, he owned and operated a beef cattle operation and from 1964 to 1968 he was also the district sales rep for Lundell Manufacturing of Cherokee, IA. In 1968 he began his employment with Melroe Company, serving as district sales manager, regional sales manager, European and Middle East sales manager (living in Brussels, Belguim 1973 to 1975), Vice President of Clark Equipment International Marketing and Bobcat foreign sales manager. From 1980 to 1990, he worked as a marketing consultant and sales manager for JBC Systems of Bismarck, ND and for Crary Company of Fargo, ND. In 1981 through 2003, he owned and operated Hein Bobcat Services, purchasing, refurbishing and marketing used Bobcats. And in 1987 through 1997 he also operated Hein Company which manufactured and marketed Tip-Off dump boxes for pick-up trucks.
Fred's biggest joy in life was spending time with his family at his lake home in Detroit Lakes. He also enjoyed traveling with Aletha, he was very proud of his accomplishment in traveling to six out of seven continents, including behind the Iron Curtain at the height of the Cold War. He was an avid pilot and enjoyed rebuilding airplanes
.
He rebuilt several, including a Cub Super Cadet, a Champs, a Cessna, a Piper Cherokee,
an Aeronca Sedan and a GlaStar
.
Fred was a member of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (A.O.P.A.), Experimental Aircraft Association (E.A.A.), American Legion, the V. F. W. the Elks and Rotary. For 35 years Fred was an active member at Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served on various committees, church council and service groups.
Survivors include his wife: Aletha of Detroit Lakes, children: Rick (Ann) of Rancho Santa Fe, CA, Rita (Bob) Falstad of Georgetown, TX, Mary Clinton of River Falls, WI, Nancy (Larry) Nordhagen of Shakopee, MN, Bill of Fargo; seven grandchildren: Tamhas Clinton, Moria Shipler, Severina Hein, Alex Nordhagen, Katy Nordhagen, Dawn Formo and Chris Formo; and a sister: Glorian Brandenburg of Alexandria, MN. Memorials are preferred to Emmanuel Nursing Home or the Alzheimer’s Research Fund.
