George L. Chilton, 91 of rural Ogema, MN died Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes, MN. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Saturday, May 2, at Assumption Catholic Church in Callaway, MN with Father Xavier Ilango officiating. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Callaway. Friends may call 5:00 to 8:00 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM Friday, May 1 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes. Visitation continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
George Leo Chilton was born September 3, 1917in Mahnomen, MN to Lee and Alvina (LaDoux) Chilton. He was raised and educated in Mahnomen and attended boarding school in Pipestone, MN. George was united in marriage with Leona Neuhalfen in Mahnomen November 24, 1943. They lived in Underwood, MN until moving to Twin Valley, MN. George and Leona moved to Ogema in 1960 where they farmed and he did road construction. George retired in 1980.
George was a member of the Local 49 Road Construction Union. He enjoyed playing cards, reading newspapers and current events. George also enjoyed fishing, hunting, making maple syrup, a good joke and ricing.
George is survived by his wife Leona Chilton of rural Ogema; children, Bonita Grahn of Austin, TX, Dennis (Diane) of Frazee, MN, Mary Carrabou (Tony Brugman) of Detroit Lakes, Karen (Max) Klarer of Ogema, Pat (Rod) Stearns of Ponsford, MN, William L. Chilton (Leoba Kolnes) of Detroit Lakes, David (Linda) of Rochert, MN, Jerry (Janice) of Callaway, Deborah Chilton of Lindstrom, MN, Sherlene Chilton of Minneapolis, MN, Donald (Brenda) of Ogema, Ronald (Diane) of Ogema, Jamie Chilton, also of Ogema; He is also survived by 37 grandchildren; 75 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Delano (Noreen) of Bristol, VA, Donavon (Sally) of Mora, MN, Wayne (Cecelia) of Billings, MT, Virgil of Billings, Ruby Ovaldson of Twin Valley, Betty Johnson of Waubun, MN, and Anne (Ben) Bement of Ogema. He was preceded in death by six brothers, James, Delmar, Maurice, Mathias, Kenneth and Glenn; and one sister, Jennie.
