Gilbert Wicker

Gilbert D. Wicker, 79, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Sanford Health, Fargo following a sudden illness. Memorial services for Gilbert will be held Saturday, October 26 at 2PM in David Donehower Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Interment will be held in Hawley Cemetery, Hawley, MN. Gilbert Delano Wicker was born December 2, 1933 in Hawley, MN to Olaf and Mary (Murphy) Wicker. He was raised and educated in Hawley graduating with the class of 1951. In 1953, Gilbert was united in marriage to Mardy Moe. They established their home in Detroit Lakes and started a family. They had five children: Mike, Sue, Sharin, Gary and Ron. Gilbert accepted a position as an assistant with Job Corp at Tamarac Wildlife Refuge and worked there from 1953-1962. Gilbert thoroughly enjoyed his time at Tamarac, especially working with kids. He later owned and operated Gil's Service Cleaners. For 25 years, Gilbert managed the Eagle's Club Aerie 2342 in Detroit Lakes until his retirement. Gilbert was united in marriage to Rita Wagner Erickson in 1984. During retirement, Rita and Gil traveled extensively. Gil loved being outdoors whenever possible. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and keeping his yard neat and tidy. He also cherished time spent with family and his grandchildren. Gilbert is survived by his wife: Rita Wicker of Detroit Lakes, his children: Mike Wicker of Detroit Lakes, Sue Olmstead of Moorhead, Sharin Wicker of Detroit Lakes, Gary Wicker of Detroit Lakes and Ron Wicker of Detroit Lakes. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two step-children: Chris (Ilda) Erickson of Cabo San Lucas, Jed (Amy) Erickson of Detroit Lakes and Cabo San Lucas, step-daughter-in-law: Claudia Erickson of Cabo San Lucas along with three brothers: Roy (Eileen) Wicker of Hawley, Albert Wicker of Renton, WA, Wayne Wicker of Ulen, and three sisters: Marion Bergside of Seattle, WA, Esther Whalen of Ulen and Grace Warnke of Detroit Lakes.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Lawrence and Robert and sisters: Pearl Lokken, Margaret Stone and Clara Olson, and step-son; Steven Erickson.
