Glenn Hillig

Glenn S. Hillig, 87, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes. Funeral Services for Glenn will be held Saturday, April 26 at 11AM in First Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. Officiating will be Reverend Wade Dutton. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services. Interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes with Military Honors to be accorded by Lake Region Honor Guard of Detroit Lakes.

Glenn Sylvester Hillig was born July 20, 1926 in Boyd, MN to Adolph J. and Adda B. (Warrick) Hillig. He was raised and educated in the Sebeka-Tintah area. Following high school, Glenn enlisted into the United States Army and was stationed in Hawaii. He was honorably discharged August 16, 1946 and returned home. He was employed with a construction company building grain elevators until an injury forced him to seek other employment. He worked as a chef for a local restaurant in Grand Forks until he met Thelma Christenson. They were united in marriage March 1, 1950 at United Lutheran Church in Grand Forks. They moved to Fargo where Glenn started his career in the grocery business as a "carry out boy" for Piggly Wiggly. Through hard work and dedication, Glenn worked his way up to management earning several awards along the way. He retired from Piggly Wiggly and purchased Meadow Lake Campground in 1978. Glenn and Thelma operated the campground for 12 years. In his spare time Glenn enjoyed visiting with friends and family, playing cards, fishing, gardening, yard work, any song by Merle Haggard, his animals and attending WeFest. During his younger years, Glenn and Thelma enjoyed traveling to various places and dancing. Glenn was a member of First Lutheran Church of Detroit Lakes, American Legion Post # 339 of Audubon and past member of the VFW of West Fargo, and Eagles Club #2342 in Detroit Lakes. He will be remembered and missed by his special granddaughters who he adored: Melody (Steve) Brown of Moorhead and Brittany Reich of Fargo. Grandsons: Michael and Matthew Hillig, great-grandchildren: Tucker and Anneliese Brown and Gavin and Cole Hillig, one sister: Grace Steinkraus of Wadena and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Thelma (2007), siblings: Carl Hillig, Caroline Steinkraus, Alma Skalisky and Ralph Hillig.
