Gwendolyn M. Stengl, 79, resident of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, November 7 at Essentia Health-St. Mary's in Detroit Lakes. Funeral Services for Gwen will be held Wednesday, November 12 at 11AM in Lake Eunice Evangelical Free Church, rural Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held at Lake Eunice Evangelical Free Church on Tuesday, November 11 from 5PM until 7PM with a 7PM Prayer Service. Interment will be held in Lakeside Cemetery, Richwood.
Gwendolyn Murial Conger known to many as "Gwen" was born December 11, 1934 in Luce, MN to Clifford and Violet (Urbach) Conger. She graduated from Frazee High School in 1953. After school she worked as a waitress and later as a cook/baker at the coffee shop in Perham. On February 14, 1955 Gwen was united in marriage to Vaughn "Casey" Stengl. Since 1960, Gwen and Casey made their home in Detroit Lakes. Gwen was a devoted wife and a wonderful homemaker. Over the years she held various jobs. She worked at the Washington School as a yard monitor, Carlson's Bakery and Turkey Barns and Hatchery. In her spare time she enjoyed cooking, baking and canning. Gwen was a talented beautician and barber as well. She would cut, perm, color and style anyone's hair who wanted her services for free. A talented interior decorator, Gwen helped several folks over the years with remodels and painting projects. She enjoyed being a Grandmother and often took her grandchildren on trips in their motor home or a day fishing out on the pontoon. She loved collecting snow villages, cups and saucers, carnival glass or anything that had a sparkle. With Casey working construction, Gwen had the opportunity to make many friends in several different states. A self taught musician, Gwen could play the organ, accordion, auto harp all by ear. Her welcoming personality and encouraging words of wisdom will always be remembered. Gwen attended several churches in the area and was proud of her spiritual birthday of April 24, 1974.
Gwen will be remembered and missed by her daughters: Sheryl (Lloyd) Knowles of Detroit Lakes, Rhonda (David) Motteberg of Detroit Lakes, along with nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by, son-in-law Robert Anderson, Callaway, MN., one sister: Mary Flath of New York Mills and one brother: Douglas (Barb) Conger of Franklin, MN and Perham. She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband Vaughn "Casey"Stengl (2009)Daughter Jaquelyn "Jacki" Stengl-Anderson and one brother, Ronald Conger.
