Harland E. Thompson, 62, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at the VA Medical Center in Fargo, ND. Funeral services for Harland will be held Monday, April 30, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Seventh-day Adventist Church, Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation will be held at David Donehower Funeral Home on Sunday, April 29, 2012 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Visitation will also continue at the church one hour prior to services on Monday. Interment will be held in Lake Eunice Seventh-day Adventist Cemetery, rural Detroit Lakes. Harland Eugene Thompson was born December 29, 1949 in Minot, ND to Darwin J. and Clyda P. (Langland) Thompson. Harland was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Minot. He attended elementary school in Minot and later Moorhead. He graduated from Dilworth High School in 1967. Following high school Harland enrolled at Moorhead State College in Moorhead. On March 28, 1970 he was united in marriage to Connie J. Harmon at United Methodist Church in Fargo. Harland enlisted into the United States Army in 1969. He proudly served his country overseas in Thailand and Vietnam before being Honorably Discharged in 1972. Upon his return home, Harland went back to college to finish his degree. He graduated from Moorhead State College in 1974, with a degree in Hotel/Motel Management along with a minor in Business Administration. He accepted his first job with AVCO Finance in Minot. He was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church, December of 1980. Harland and his family later moved to South Dakota where for 12 years Harland worked in sales. In November of 1990, they moved to Detroit Lakes. Harland worked for the "Shopper" out of Halstad, MN selling advertisements. He also worked for Norseman Motors, Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce, where he felt great honor being a Chamber Ambassador, and for a short time with KDLM radio. Harland was extremely active with his church. He taught Sabbath School, served as a Deacon and also was music director for over 20 years. Harland was gifted with a beautiful voice and participated with the Barbershop quartet as well as many other venues throughout his life. His favorite was singing to his children, grandchildren and nieces as they were growing up. Harland was a proud member of the Detroit Lakes Veterans Color Guard, an advocate of the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) where he served as past commander and also was a strong supporter of the Seventh-day Adventist Christian School in Detroit Lakes. He loved children and helping out the teachers in any way he was able. Harland adored his grandchildren, taking every opportunity he had to spend time with them. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing, fishing and playing racketball.
Harland's zest for life, love for his family and passion for his church and community will be truly missed. Harland is survived by his wife: Connie Thompson of Detroit Lakes, children: Reade (Rachel Mays) Thompson of Michigan, Kristine (Alex James) Thompson of Oklahoma, Kymlyn Meyer of Illinois, and his five grandchildren: Michael Botzet, Kenneth Thompson, Brianne Forman, Kari Meyer and Bryant Thompson. He is also survived by his sisters: DeAnne (Kenneth) Moser of Hillsboro, OR and Betty Jo (Wesley) Sorenson of Vergas, MN, one sister-in-law: Lanni LeClair of Sioux City, IA and five special nieces: Debbie, Lori, Lisa, Tanya, Delaine, Kelli and Derri. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Gregg Thompson and one brother-in-law: Jim Morgan. In lieu of flowers memorials can be directed to Seventh Day Adventist Christian School 404 Richwood Rd in Detroit Lakes, MN.
