Hazel Virginia Heikkinen, 88, Frazee, MN, died March 29, 2010 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, in Detroit Lakes. Services for Hazel will be Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 2:00 at the David-Donehower Chapel in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at the Aurora Homestead Cemetery in Niagra, Wisconsin.
Hazel Sjoquist was born November 7, 1921 to Garfield and Mary (Maki) Sjoquist at Iron Mountain, Michigan. She was raised and educated at Iron Mountain graduating with the class of 1939. After graduating, she worked as a bookkeeper for the Best’s Creamery in Iron Mountain. On July 26, 1947 she was united in marriage to Walfred Heikkinen in Iron Mountain. In 1952 they moved to Crystal Falls, Michigan. When her children grew, Hazel went to work for Lud Stoor Insurance Agency. Walfred died May 26, 1987. In 2003 Hazel moved to Frazee, Minnesota to be near her daughter, Marianne.
Hazel was a founding member of the Faith Baptist Church in Crystal Falls and remained actively connected with the congregation there. She was a beloved Sunday school teacher, and an officer in the church. She was also called upon to sing, and enjoyed sharing her love of music. Hazel was also an avid gardener.
Hazel is survived by her daughter, Marianne (Mark) Brainard of Frazee, MN., a son Alan (Lorna) Heikkinen of Oakland, CA. 9 Grandchildren, 5 Great-Grandchildren, one sister; Joyce (Gordon) Grams of Iron Mountain, MI. and one brother: Dale (Mary) Sjoquist of Wausauke, WI.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Walfred, sister, Mary Alice and brother, Leslie. The family requests that any donations or gifts be given to the Lakeview Bible Church (Faith Baptist) of Crystal Falls, MI. David-Donehower Funeral Home is serving the family. Memories may be shared at
