Helen E. Brehm, 91, resident of Detroit Lakes, formerly of Ogema and Waubun, passed peacefully to her heavenly Savior May 24, 2016 at Golden Manor Assisted Living in Detroit Lakes. Funeral Services for Helen will be held Friday, May 27 at 11AM in Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, Callaway. Visitation will be held at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church on Thursday, May 26 from 5pm-7pm with a 7pm Prayer Service. Interment will be held at the Ogema City Cemetery. Helen Edith Liezert was born October 11, 1924 in Detroit Lakes, MN to Delbert and Jeanette (Hellickson) Liezert. She was raised on the farm along with her younger sister, Joyce. They were very close and loved each other to the end. After high school, Helen attended accounting school and worked as a bookkeeper and accountant for a few area businesses along with managing the farm. During WWII, Helen moved to St. Cloud. She assisted in building planes and was part of the group known as "Rosie the Riveters".
After the war, Helen was united in marriage to Otto Zayic who had just returned from being deployed overseas. To this union were four sons. Otto passed away at a very young age from a brain tumor. Helen continued to operate the farm and raise four young children. Her work ethic and determination carried her through the years, an acquired trait she instilled in each one of her boys. Several years after Otto passed away, Helen was united in marriage to John Brehm and they were blessed with one son. Helen was a wonderful homemaker, a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. If you needed a shoulder to lean on, an ear to listen, or some good old fashion advice, Helen always made herself present. She was active in her son's schools, faithful parishioner at church, and taught Sunday school for many years. Helen loved her church and church family and cherished the relationships made over the years. Helen will be remembered and deeply missed but her family takes comfort in knowing she is with our Savior and is at peace. She is survived by her five sons: Ronald (Jean) Zayic, David Zayic, Dennis (Diane) Zayic, Jerry (Sheryl) Zayic and John (Dawn) Brehm along with 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, 1st husband Otto Zayic, 2nd husband John Brehm and sister, Joyce Kozitka.
