Helen I. Erickson, 90, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Sunday, September 4, 2011 at Oak Crossing of Detroit Lakes.
Funeral Services for Helen will be held Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 11:00 AM in Grace Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at David Donehower Funeral Home from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service. Visitation will also continue at the church one hour prior to services on Thursday. Interment will be held in Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes. Helen Irene Stende was born October 11, 1920 in Ulen, MN to S.Edwin and Nellie (Nelson) Stende. She was baptized and confirmed in Aspelund Lutheran Church and attended country school near Flom. After she finished school, Helen began working for her uncles doing household chores and cooking for all the farm hands. She later took a job in Fargo, ND as a housekeeper before returning back to the Flom area. On June 13, 1943, Helen was united in marriage to Edwin Ochsner on her family farm. Together they made their home in the Waubun area and began raising their family. In 1965, they moved to Detroit Lakes. For 28 years, Helen worked for Swift & Company doing line work before retiring in 1983. Edwin passed away in February of 1994. On May 27, 1995 Helen was united in marriage to Harland Erickson. Harland passed away in March of 2008.
Helen was an excellent seamstress. She made numerous pieces of clothing for her family and herself. She also enjoyed tending to her garden, canning and was a wonderful cook. While living at Lincoln Park, Helen spent free time playing Bingo and visiting with the many friends she made throughout the years. Helen will be remembered and missed by her two sons: Elwood (Terri) Ochsner of Eagan, MN and Robert (Lynette) Ochsner of Bemidji, MN along with one sister: Muriel Meyer of Moorhead, MN.
She is preceded in death by her parents, first husband Edwin (1994), second husband Harland (2008) and siblings: Clarence Stende, Eleanor Odland, Sylve Stende, Eugene Stende, Gladys Houglum and Lester Stende.
