Henry Johnson

June 13, 1921 — February 15, 2010

Henry was born June 13, 1921 in Detroit Lakes to Jalmer and Nettie (Helgerson) Johnson. Henry graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1939. From 1939 until 1942 he worked in Bemidji as a Public Accountant.


In 1942 Henry enlisted and served in the U.S. Navy. He was discharged in 1945. After his discharge Henry enrolled in Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Georgia. Upon graduation from college, Henry felt called to attend Seminary. He attended The Reformed Episcopal Seminary in Philadelphia. His first pastorate was in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and he served there until 1965. He served with the American Board of Missions to the Jewish people from 1965-1975 in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. From 1975 to 1977 Henry worked as a supply minister in Pennsylvania and in Ohio. He served as Pastor at the Lednum Street Presbyterian Church in Durham, North Carolina from 1977 to 1986. He retired to Detroit Lakes in 1986. Henry was very active. He would walk and jog five miles a day until knee surgery slowed him down. He also enjoyed traveling, especially his trips to Europe where he was able to apply his studies in Greek, French, German and Latin. Henry will always be remembered by his family and his many dear friends at Faith Free Lutheran for his outgoing personality and giving nature.


Henry is survived by his sister-in-law; Edith Johnson of Ada, MN along with several nieces and nephews.


He is preceded in death by his parents, brother Jalmer, sisters: May, Thelma, Hatty and Edla.
