Henry D. McKay, 83, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Friday, January 21, 2011 at Mesa Regional Medical Center in Mesa, AZ.
Funeral Services for Henry will be held Friday, January 28, 2011 at 11:00 AM in First Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. Officiating will be Reverend Wade Dutton. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 27, 2011 at David Donehower Funeral Home from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 7:00 PM Masonic Service. Visitation will also continue one hour prior to services on Friday.
Henry Doyle McKay was born on February 3, 1927 in Dustin, OK, the oldest of five children to Roy and Alice (White) McKay. He served with the United States Maritime Service (USMS) during World War II and in 1945 answered the call of his country, enlisting into the United States Army. Henry was honorably discharged in 1947 and made his home in Cooperstown, ND. He was employed at the Ford Garage in Cooperstown and married his boss' daughter, Shirley Rebhahn in 1949. He lived in Oklahoma until he was called to serve again during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged for a second time in 1951. Henry returned to North Dakota and later attended Gail Institute in Minneapolis. In 1952, he accepted a position with the Soo Line Railroad, and worked for the railroad for ten years. In 1960, Henry bought the American Family Insurance agency in Enderlin ND and sold insurance part-time while working for the railroad. He was later offered a sales management position with American Family and in September of 1962, Henry moved to Fargo. He was united in marriage to Marie Zeller in 1987 and retired from American Family in 1991. They enjoyed their retirement years in Detroit Lakes, MN and spent their winters in Apache Junction, Arizona.
Henry or Hank, as many of his friends knew him, was a member of the El Zagal Shrine Color Guard, the VFW and The Benevolent Order of Elks. Henry enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, and interesting cars. Most of all he enjoyed making connections with family and friends. Henry was a fine leader, a hard worker and a good friend. Henry will be remembered and missed by his wife Marie and children Valerie( Jeff) Softing, Steven (Arleen) McKay and their mother Shirley McKay; his brothers Gerald (Delores) McKay, Thomas (Jo Ann) McKay, and sister Jean Sebrie. He is also survived by six grand children and three great grand children.
He was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Alice, and his sister Rachel Robinson.
