Hertha's journey began in Heide, Germany January 21, 1917, born to E. Alfred Hauptmann and Pauline (Holst) Hauptmann. Hertha and the family immigrated to the United States in 1923 through Ellis Island, and settled in Bettendorf, Iowa. Hertha graduated from Davenport High School, and later served there as school secretary. She married Thomas W. Keenan on December 28, 1940 and they moved to Walker, MN where they owned and operated the Stony Point Resort. They returned to Shenandoah, IA, Tom's birthplace, where they started their family and were co-owner's of the Keenan Apartments. In 1950, they settled in Detroit Lakes, where Hertha worked for the Federal Government and was the State Supervisor for Selective Service at the time of her retirement in the mid 70's. They became snow-birds and spent their winters in Weslaco, Texas returning home to Detroit Lakes for the summer months. Hertha and Tom loved to travel, and spent many hours on the road in travel trailers, motor homes, airplanes and cruise ships exploring the country, and many regions of the world.
They made numerous trips to Europe, returning to Hertha's birthplace, a moving experience for her. Hertha was a gracious hostess and always had a wonderful meal for you to enjoy. She loved and welcomed each new family member, and remained, always, a lady. She was a loving wife and mother, and an adoring grandmother. She is survived by her daughter Carol Johnston, of Weslaco, TX, daughter-in-law, Marietta Keenan, of Detroit Lakes, grandchildren Jeffrey (Nicole) Johnston, David (Carol Mayer) Johnston, Jane (Christopher) Beach, Sarah (Travis) Deike, Shanon (Jerry) Nowell, and Kassia (Shawn) Serrano. Great-grandchildren Samuel and Jack Johnston, Keenan and Madeline Johnston, Margaret and Laura Beach, Frederick and Keenan Deike, Gilbert and Louis Nowell, and Sidney and Anais Serrano.
