Hilma Kangas

Hilma M. Kangas, 89, resident of Wolf Lake, MN, died Sunday, May 30, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Park Rapids, MN.

Funeral Services for Hilma will be held Friday, June 4, 2010 at 11:00 AM in Gethsemane Lutheran Church, Snellman, MN. Visitation will be held Thursday, June 3, 2010 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at David-Donehower Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will also continue at the church one hour prior to services on Friday. Interment will be held at Pickerel Lake Community Cemetery, rural Osage, MN.

Hilma was born in Shell Lake Township on March 23, 1921, to Eli and Maria (Yliniemi) Yoki. She attended country school near Shell Lake, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1938. She was united in marriage to Leonard Kangas on December 18, 1938, in Toad Lake Township. They resided in Wolf Lake and began to raise their family. From 1960 – 1966, Hilma worked various jobs. She started working for Becker County Social Services in 1966 and retired in 1983. Hilma lived 5 years at the Greystone apartments in Detroit Lakes and most recently she was a resident at Rose Haven in Menahga, MN.

Hilma will be remembered and missed by her children: Mary Bartel of Wolf Lake, MN, Ivan (Kathy) Kangas of Osage, MN, Irving Kangas of Wolf Lake, MN, Steven Kangas of Minneapolis, MN, Carlton (Jane) of Fall Creek, WI, Merlin Kangas of Wolf Lake, MN, Arlen (Yvonne) Kangas of Osage, MN, Eldon (Michelle) Kangas of Baxter, MN, Howard (Terri) Kangas of Ottertail, MN. Dagne Kangas of Minneapolis, MN. Daughter-in-Law, Nancy Kangas, Hugo, MN and Son-in-Law, Fred Groth, Mentor, MN.   She is also survived by 28 grandchildren and 27  great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Leonard (1979), one son: John Kangas and one daughter, Lillian Groth.
