James A. Bergen, 60, Detroit Lakes, died Monday at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:00 PM Monday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes, Msgr. Timothy McGee, officiating. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery. Friends may call 4:00 – 7:00 PM Sunday at David-Donehower Funeral Home. The Knights of Columbus will pray the Rosary at 6:30 PM followed by a Holy Rosary Parish Vigil at 7:00 Pm at the funeral Home. The visitation will continue 1 hour prior to the Mass at the church on Monday. James A. Bergen was born June 13, 1953 in Detroit Lakes to LeRoy and Martha (Tembrock) Bergen. He is a 1971 graduate of Detroit Lakes High School and then took horticulture classes at St. Cloud State University and at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. Jim was united in marriage to Deborah Bellefeuille in 1977 in Detroit Lakes. They lived in St. Cloud where he worked for Bergen's Greenhouse. Their daughter Heather was born in 1980. Following the closing of the greenhouse, Jim sold insurance for Bankers Life & Casualty until moving back to Detroit Lakes in 1998. One of the happiest times in Jim's life was the birth of his grandchildren and he treasured spending time with them. He also enjoyed playing guitar, drums and the piano. He loved skiing, camping, fishing, NASCAR, playing cribbage, crossword puzzles and horses. He was also known for being a history buff. Survivors include his daughter, Heather (Brian) Albrecht of Minneapolis, MN, his grandchildren, Eve and Rohan, his Mother, Martha Bergen of Detroit Lakes, six brothers and four sisters: Robert (Cookie) of Detroit Lakes, Ray "Butch" (Akama) of Woodstock, NY, Karen (Bob) Velline of Cold Spring, MN, Joanne Lane of St. Cloud, MN, Rick (Sue) of Maple Grove, MN, Mike (Patty) of Salt Lake City, UT, Patty (Mitch) Vogt of Detroit Lakes, MN, Mary (Marty) Solmon of Detroit Lakes, MN, Steve of Detroit Lakes, Joe (Kelli) of Cold Spring, MN. He was preceded in death by his father a sister, Monica, a brother, Ronald and a brother-in-law, Don Lane, two nephews: Gabriel Solmon and Steven Selevan.
