James Heitmann

James "Jim" Lee Heitmann, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away at the Ecumen – Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at the age of 82. Memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015, at Zion Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Friday, May 15, 2015, at David-Donehower Funeral Home with a prayer service to take place at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Jim was born March 8, 1933, to William and Edna (Dockter) Heitmann in Martin, ND. He married Marcdeda Kost on June 21, 1959 in Martin, ND. Jim and Marceda had two sons, Rick and Kraig Heitmann. Jim served his country in the US Army (Signal Corps) from 1954-1956 in Korea. He received an Honorable Discharge from the Army Reserve April 30, 1962. Jim attended barber school at the Moler Barber College in Fargo and owned and operated barber shops in Fessenden and Harvey, ND. He attended Minot State University and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Special Education. Jim and Marceda moved to Detroit Lakes, MN in 1969 where Jim was employed by Detroit Lakes Schools for 19 years. Jim had many interests. He farmed, raised cattle and registered quarter horses. He was an avid gardener and established the Hilltop Greenhouse and Nursery. He enjoyed winters in Mesa, AZ. He is survived by his wife, Marceda Heitmann; two sons: Rick of Colorado Springs, CO, and Kraig (JoAnn) of Lewiston, ID; one sister, Elaine Palmer; one brother, Roger (Evie) both of Harvey, ND; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Chester and John.
