James D. “Herf” Herfendahl, age 74, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Sunday, January 11, 2009 at Emmanuel Nursing Home after a short battle with liver cancer. Funeral Services for Jim will be held Thursday, January 15, 2009 at 11:00 AM in Emmanuel Nursing Home Chapel of Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation will be held Thursday, January 15, 2009 from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Emmanuel Nursing Home Chapel.
Jim was born on April 30, 1934 to Willie and Muriel (Englund) Herfindahl in Callaway, MN. They moved to San Leandro, CA where Jim attended school. After graduating he enlisted in the Air Force. After four years of service he returned to California and worked at various jobs. In 1957 he returned to Minnesota. On May 20, 1958 he married Sylvia Helseth in Battle Lake, MN. After their marriage they moved to California where their two daughters were born. In 1962, they moved to Fergus Falls, MN where Jim worked for Sears as a salesman. In 1967, Jim and his family moved to Detroit Lakes where Jim became manager of the Sears store in town. In 1984 he sold the business and became semi – retired. He started working at the Detroit Lakes Country Club. He must have been happy because he worked there for 25 years! Jim was a skilled wood worker, often going with his own designs and making it a finished product. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, golfing, stamp collecting and his Wednesday night card games with friends. In May of 2008, Jim and Sylvia celebrated their 50

wedding anniversary.
Jim will be remembered and missed by his wife Sylvia of Detroit Lakes, MN, daughters; Lori Anderson of Fargo, ND, Julie (Pete) Randolph of Detroit Lakes, MN, six grandchildren; Jamie Anderson, Christopher Hanson, Travis Anderson, Melissa Hanson, Ashley Anderson and Alexa Anderson and one great-granddaughter Aspyn Larson. He is also survived by one brother Doug Herfindahl of California and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Willie and Muriel and one sister Joyce Reece.
